The Metropolitan Opera

Bringing the world's foremost opera house into Puerto Rican classrooms.

What your school gains

An alliance with the Met

The Olga Iglesias Project (OIP) is the Metropolitan Opera's HD Live in Schools partner in Puerto Rico. Through this alliance, the artistry of one of the world's foremost opera houses reaches students across the island, woven directly into the educational recitals and children's opera we bring to your school.

It is the heart of what makes an OIP visit more than a single afternoon of music: a doorway to a living art form, opened for a generation of Puerto Rican students.

A message from the Metropolitan Opera on bringing its education programs to Puerto Rico.

What your school gains

Request an educational recital or our children's opera, and your students step into the Met's world.

The Met, on the big screen

Students experience The Met: Live in HD, the same celebrated productions broadcast to cinemas around the world, screened right here in Puerto Rico.

In Puerto Rico these screenings are presented through Caribbean Cinemas, so dates and showtimes follow the cinema's schedule.

  • Stream the Met in the classroom

Teachers and students gain access to Met Opera on Demand, the company's streaming library of acclaimed performances, to explore in class and at home.

  • World-class teaching materials

The Met's Educator Guides, Illustrated Synopses, and cross-curricular activities help teachers fold opera into language arts, social studies, music, and the visual arts, with coloring sheets and puzzles for the youngest students too.

  • Support for teachers

Invitations to the Met's National Educator Conference and local workshops connect Puerto Rican educators to a nationwide community of opera teaching.

The Laffont Competition

Sustaining Puerto Rico's road to the Met stage

Laffont Competition

The Metropolitan Opera's Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition, formerly the National Council Auditions, is the Met's national search for opera's great young voices. Each season, close to 1,500 singers compete across dozens of districts and regions for a place in the semifinals, sung on the Met stage in New York.

Since 2021, the Olga Iglesias Project has contributed to the competition's Puerto Rico District in San Juan every year, keeping that direct road between the island's singers and the Met stage open.

The road works: in 2023, soprano Lucila Zavala, an artist in residence of the Project, took first place in the district and sang in the national semifinals on the Met stage itself.
