The Kennedy Center discovered this photo in a recording posted on the OIP YouTube channel where Founder and Executive Director Anthony Cheney Guzmán interviews Justino Díaz in June 2020. This photo was taken by the grandfather of Cheney Guzmán, husband of Olga Iglesias, during a rehearsal for an opera in which both Iglesias and Díaz were part of the cast in 1972.
This recording evidences the multiple occasions on which Díaz and Iglesias collaborated during the 1960s and 1970s. The most memorable moment of this collaboration occurred when both appeared for the first time in June 1964 under the baton of Pablo Casals singing The Creation of Haydn during the Casals Festival.
“It is an honor for us to be able to collaborate with such a prestigious entity as the Kennedy Center and contribute to educational efforts to show Puerto Rican culture to the world,” said Cheney Guzmán.
